Plan ahead of Coachella rush to avoid crowds

Tens of thousands of visitors are getting ready to converge in the Coachella Valley for the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

The city of Indio and the Indio Police Department recently issued travel alerts to make sure you typical commute doesn’t turn into a traveler’s nightmare.

Knowing the best way to get around town might help alleviate headaches, but how else can you prepare for the potential onslaught of visitors during the festival weekends?

Poll: Are you stocking up on groceries ahead of Coachella rush?

Some grocery stores are shifting into full-festival mode by stocking up the beer towers, water, and sunscreen. Stores close to the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio specifically deal with a surge of shoppers.

Shoppers said they’re getting their grocery shopping done early to avoid the crowds.

“We shop before it happens and kind of on Monday and Tuesday when there’s not as many people in the valley,” said Alex Johnson.

Many restaurants are capitalizing on the crowds of festival goers stocking up and needing a place to refuel.

“We’re doing a happy hour, we’re doing a 20 percent discount if you show your wristband and we’re going to open at 8 in the morning on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” said Angel Galvez, a waiter at Ros Amarillos.

Overall, most people we talked to said they’ll deal with the crowds and traffic if it means good things for the local economy.
