Local band prepares to play at Coachella for first time
For about two decades, Will Sturgeon’s passion has been music.
“It has always been a huge part of my life,” Sturgeon said. “I love listening to music. I just love it. I couldn’t tell you why. I’m primarily a songwriter, and that really helps me to work through a lot of personal issues.”
Sturgeon said his music has taken him all around southern California, from college in Los Angeles, to his latest project, brightener.
He said brightener is an opportunity to share his passion with his other love. His friends and family.
“To be on stage and have my sister, who’s two years younger than me. We grew up together, and we obviously had our difficulties as teenagers. But as adults now, we’re very close,” Sturgeon said. “She’s my best friend, and to have her up on stage playing music with me, we can make eye contact and be like, ‘Wow. We’re doing this.”
But of all the stages he’s crossed in life, he said there was always one dream gig.
“Growing up and being a songwriter here, the holy grail of gigs is playing Coachella,” Sturgeon said. “It’s not even just a gig I want to play. That’s a goal I have for my life.”
That goal was a dream for Sturgeon until about a few days ago, when he said he got the call of a lifetime.
“It was just such an incredible moment,” Sturgeon said. “I was shaking. I still to this moment have not processed it. Immediately, I called everybody to make sure we can actually play it.”
Now getting ready to take the stage at Coachella, he said he’s ready to write a new verse, with both loves on the big stage.
“I love them so much, and it just feels like a family,” Sturgeon said. “I’m so glad we’re taking this ride with all of us together.”
Sturgeon said brightener will play at the outdoor stage at Coachella tomorrow, April 16th, at Noon.
