Thousands of voters, including celebrities, register to wrong party

A survey finds that tens of thousands of voters, including Demi Moore and other celebrities, have registered as members of a conservative minor political party in California in an apparent mix-up over its name.

The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that a telephone survey of 500 members of the American Independent Party found nearly 3 of 4 did not realize they had joined.

The party opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage, and calls for building a fence along the U.S. border.

The newspaper says people were confused by the word “independent” in the party’s name and believed they were registering to no party at all.

Moore was among Hollywood celebrities with known Democratic leanings listed as members. A Moore representative tells the newspaper it’s a mistake.
