Light synchronization project to begin in Coachella
The City of Coachella is making changes to make your commute a lot smoother on one of its busiest roads. But, the commute may be a bit bumpy for the next six months as drivers should expect periodic delays during the traffic signal synchronization project along Harrison Avenue.
Officials said to improve the flow of traffic on Harrison Street, the city will sync its traffic lights from Avenue 48 to Avenue 54. The focus is to clear up traffic and air pollution.
The city advised everyone to begin preparing for the traffic delays on Thursday, April 27.
“Motorists will experience occasional delays as fiber optic lines are installed along Harrison Avenue and adjacent streets as part of the traffic signal synchronization project,” said Maritza Martinez, Coachella’s public works director.
“We know Harrison Street is well-traveled as the city grows,” said Mayor Steven Hernandez. “We’re doing everything we can to improve our air quality.”
The Coachella City Council awarded $2.2 million to Temecula-based DBX, Inc. on April 13 to carry out the project over the next six months. A fiber-optic cable will be installed and allow for cameras at intersections that feed live video to the city’s Corporate Yard.
“In the case of public safety, we can pull up the camera and see what’s going on at that intersection,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez said the project will help with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments plan for a regional signal light synchronization.
