Major roadway shut down as Cathedral City firefighters battle blaze

Cathedral Canyon Drive is shut down between Ortega Road and 33rd Avenue as firefighters work to mop up a structure fire that broke out around 6:30 p.m.

An adult and child suffered first, second and third degree burns to their hands, knees and thighs in the blaze that appeared to destroy a duplex. They were the only ones home at the time.

Both victims were taken to the hospital.

A total of six people are displaced from two units of the duplexes on the 33-300 block of Cathedral Canyon.

Smoke was seen coming from the upper windows of the one story structure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
