TRAFFIC ALERT: Expect delays at Jefferson Interchange in Indio

UPDATE: Interstate 10 open again in westbound lanes and traffic is moving normally.

Still expect delays today getting on the freeway at Jefferson Street as traffic from Jefferson Street and Indio Boulevard is being detoured onto Varner Road and having to navigate additional traffic signals.

An overnight freeway closure was slowing traffic along Interstate 10 in Indio early Wednesday morning.

Westbound freeway traffic was being detoured off Interstate 10 at the Jefferson Street exit, then using Varner Road until reentering the freeway at Washington Street.

Eastbound freeway traffic was not affected by the closure.

Crews are working to place steel girders for a second new bridge now under construction at the Jefferson Street Interchange.

Westbound traffic was expected to be detoured until the project wrapped up for the day by 6:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Traffic entering the freeway from Indio Boulevard and Jefferson Street can also expect delays as the connectors have been rerouted forcing motorists to use Varner Road to access the freeway.

No major delays were being reported as of 4:00 a.m., but traffic typically picks up at 5:00 a.m., so motorists were urged to use caution.
