The Riverside County Coroner’s Office has identified the man killed in a crash on Interstate 10 in Cabazon Wednesday as 59-year old Miguel Rolon of Thermal.
Rolon’s stepson Ricardo Valencia shared Miguel’s photo with us Thursday morning and said his family is gathered in Salton City as they prepare to set funeral arrangements.
Valencia said his stepfather was born in Tecoman, Colima Mexico.
The crash occurred at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday between Main Street and Haugen Lehman Way, according to a CHP traffic advisory. All eastbound lanes were back open by 3:11 p.m.
Photos: FedEx truck slams into stalled flatbed truck on eastbound I-10
Our crew on scene learned that Rolon’s flatbed truck stalled in the No. 3 lane on the freeway shortly after 11 a.m., and he was standing on the truck trying to wave down drivers to warn them of the situation.
That’s when a FedEx truck clipped the side of the flatbed truck as the driver tried to swerve to the left and avoid the collision. Authorities said the man on the flatbed truck was ejected onto the road and died at the scene.
Authorities are trying to determine why the flatbed truck stalled.
Officials said the driver of the Fed Ex truck and his passenger sustained minor injuries. The FedEx truck also spilled a 50-gallon diesel tank on the roadway, prompting Hazmat to respond to the crash.
Two other semi trucks collided with debris and were partially damaged, according to the CHP.
Officers said alcohol and drugs weren’t factors in the crash.
Anyone driving eastbound on the interstate was asked to take an alternate route or expect delays throughout the day.
