Clinton seeks California supporters in Riverside
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton took to the stage in Riverside on Tuesday to ask for California’s support.
Several thousand people waited in line for hours, but only 750 people could crowd into the Johnson Family Practice Center at UC Riverside to see Clinton.
“It’s such a pleasure to have her here,” said Jeanette Singh, of Riverside. “My husband’s a professor here and it’s an honor to have her here representing the city that has so many resources. I’m very proud of that.”
Hundreds of people had to listen to the Hillary For America event from outside the building because of the large turnout. Many supporters and others wanted to learn how Clinton would fight for them as president.
“Number one for us is women’s rights and the middle class so we know she’s fighting for us,” said Kathleen Katz, of Temecula.
Clinton said she stands for women’s rights, and wants to raise the minimum wage, improve education and lower health care costs. Clinton never mentioned her Democratic opponent Bernie Sanders, but she was quick to throw jabs at Republican contender Donald Trump.
“This primary needs to send a real signal that Donald trump will hear wherever he is: California wants a positive future,” Clinton said.
Not everyone on campus was a fan of Clinton. A group of students shouted against her, peacefully protesting before, during and after the event. The students were not clear supporters of any presidential candidate.
“We are a group of students of color coming together,” one protester said.
“We will not be silenced in the face of government violence,” protesters chanted. “H is for hypocrisy.”
Meanwhile, Clinton posed for photos with supporters.
“I was glad to see her,” said Don Dillard, of Ontario. “And tempted at that time to say ‘Madam Secretary.'”
Clinton’s focus is on California and winning enough delegates to clinch the nomination.
“I need your help in this primary. I need your help in November. Let’s fight for the future that we want. Thank you, Riverside,” Clinton said at the end of her speech.
