Police to issue citations for personal fireworks in Palm Springs

Firefighters and police officers in Palm Springs are reminding residents that all personal fireworks are illegal within city limits, and the police department will issue citations for anyone found with fireworks.

With the Fourth of July approaching, stands in Cathedral City have already begun selling ‘Safe and Sane’ fireworks, which are much less dangerous than illegal fireworks, but those same fireworks are still illegal in Palm Springs. Many nonprofits and charities are cashing-in on the Safe and Sane firework sales.

“Each year during the Fourth of July holiday, firefighters respond to fires and injuries that simply don’t need to occur,” says Fire Chief Kevin Nalder. “Fireworks in untrained hands are a terrible accident waiting to happen.”

Safe and Sane fireworks that are sold to the public only refer to fireworks that do not fly or explode such as sparklers, fountains, snake items and spinners, according to Nalder, who notes that parents are often unaware that the tip of a sparkler burns at temperatures exceeding 1,200 degrees and is capable of causing third degree burns.

“As a result, all fireworks found in Palm Springs will be confiscated and anyone possessing fireworks will receive a citation,” says Nalder.

But, while authorities stress the importance of fire safety this holiday, they said there will still be plenty of festivities to enjoy at the ‘All American Fourth of July’ fireworks show at Palm Springs Stadium.

The city’s fireworks display will once again be held following the Palm Springs Power baseball game, where the team finds itself hosting Southern Nevada at 6:05 p.m. The fireworks show is scheduled for 9:15 p.m. and free admission begins at 8 p.m.
