Inaugural “Veterans University” kicks off in Palm Desert

The inaugural Veterans University welcomed a crowd of people for it’s first day of class Saturday. Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz is spearheading the project, as a means of empowering veterans with knowledge and action, so they can get the help they need. Gary Caldwell served in the Gulf War and said it’s something he lives with every day.

“For a lot of us the war is never over. You try to get it out of your head, but it’s just really tough,” Caldwell said.

He said this weekend is an opportunity for him.

“I’m hoping to learn what my benefits are and how to access them and meet some other veterans,” Caldwell said.

Ruiz shared his passion for helping veterans.

“To bring organizations together, to elevate the priority of service to our veterans, to have fellowships so they have moments to exchange ideas and relay the resources they have and make the connections needed, to get the best services they possibly can,” Ruiz said.

He said veterans need better health care and quicker access to their benefits.

“We’re making sure our veterans have a speedy review that widows don’t have to go through red tape because family members have served our country as well because it’s a big sacrifice,” Ruiz said.

Ruiz said they’re planning on putting information online, focusing on digital platforms in an effort to attract younger veterans as well. Many said they’re thankful their elected officials are standing up for them.

“Navigating the bureaucracy and red tape is a big challenge and Dr. Ruiz has been instrumental in cutting some of that red tape out,” said veteran Robert Frantz.

Ruiz hopes this program makes his district the most veteran-friendly place to live.
