Coachella reverses fireworks decision for soccer association
It’s nearing the 4th of July, and that means fireworks stands all over the valley including one that was supposed to stand right here on the corner of Harrison and Avenue 52. The Coachella Valley Youth Soccer Association had their permit taken away after nearly 5000 dollars worth were stolen Tuesday morning. Around 2pm today their luck changed when Mayor Steve Hernandez said the city of Coachella changed their mind, and the okay was given to sell.
“We tried to raise money because we have to pay fees to use the soccer fields in Coachella, and we also want to help the soccer team come from Colorado and in two weeks have to go to Oklahoma for the nationals.” Victor Alcantara, the spokesmen for the organization said.
“For this to happen, it’s terrible, these kids have a one in a million opportunity for some of these kids. They might not get it again, and the city doesn’t show any support.” A mother of one of the U13 players Rocio Alcantara said.
After winning the state wide tournament, the U13 Boys Coachella squad went on to win the west coast region in Denver. This punched their ticket to the National Championship in Oklahoma just a few weeks form now, and part of the proceeds were hoping to make their dream come true.
“It’s a big deal for us because we are in this valley and going all the way to Oklahoma which is like an 18-hour drive and it’s just the best feeling. There a lot of teams that can make it over there but we are just maybe the best one to make it over there.” Cesar Romero a U13 player said.
“We will do anything we can, there going, no matter what they are going. With the help of the city or not the help, or whatever, they are going. All these kids are going to that tournament.”
