Former nursing assistant must stand trial for alleged assault

A judge ruled Friday that 49-year-old Gil Lopez of Cathedral City must stand trial for the alleged assault of a woman during an overnight stay at Eisenhower Medical Center.

Lopez is a former nursing assistant at the hospital and is facing a number of charges, including forcible sexual penetration. Investigators said prescribed pain medication weakened the victim’s ability to resist the assault.

The victim has since filed a lawsuit against the hospital and Lopez. Lopez was arrested in January and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
