When a Police Officer is killed in the line of duty serving to protect a community it is tragic. Officer Jermaine Gibson made the ultimate sacrifice for the community of Cathedral City on March 18, 2011 when he was killed while pursuing Durjan Gray who was a wanted parolee at large. Durjan Gray led Officer Gibson and Officer Freddie Luna on an 11 mile high speed pursuit that began in Cathedral City and ended tragically in Palm Springs.
I am pleased with the verdict the jury returned today as Durjan Gray was found guilty on all four felony counts charged including second degree murder. Gray will be sentenced for his crimes on September 9, 2016 in Banning and this will help the healing process begin for the family and friends of Officer Jermaine Gibson, the community of Cathedral City and the men and women of the Cathedral City Police Department. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Palm Springs Police Department,
California Highway Patrol, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and the Palm Springs Fire Department for their professionalism and dedication in assisting our Department with the initial investigation and over the past five years as this case went through the justice system. Deputy District Attorney Tony Orlando did an incredible job with this case and we are grateful to him for all the hard work and preparation he put into this case.
We ask that you continue to keep the wife, son, parents and family members of Officer Jermaine Gibson in your thoughts and prayers. Officer Jermaine Gibson will always be remembered for his selfless sacrifice, sense of duty, sense of honor and loyalty as he honorably served this country in the United States Marine Corps and served the Community of Cathedral City with pride.
