Coachella man arrested after hours-long standoff in Thermal

Update 4:00 a.m. Monday
Police arrested a Coachella man, Juan Moya, 50, after he surrendered to SWAT Team members after a several hour stand-off at a home on the 51200 block of Jackson Street in Thermal.

Moya was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio on charges of negligent discharge of a firearm and other weapons related charges.

No injuries were reported.

Police said Moya refused to surrender after they were first called to the scene for reports of shots fired at approximately 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies said they heard several shots fired from the location.

Update 9:35 p.m. Officers remain on scene of an active standoff with a shooting suspect in Coachella. The more than six hour standoff began at 3 p.m. when police officers responded to a call of shots fired on Jackson Street. Deputies confirmed shots were fired and found an armed man who refused to cooperate.

As of 9:35 p.m. the man was at a home. Deputies were able to get several adults and children out of the home safely.

SWAT Team members are still working with the man to surrender peacefully.

No injuries have been reported.

Northbound and southbound lanes of Jackson Street between Avenue 50 and Avenue 52 remain closed.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputies have closed off the intersection of Avenue 52 and Jackson Street after law enforcement officers received initial reports of a possible shooting.

The activity is located near the Coachella Valley Cemetery.

Indio Police officers said they received initial reports from deputies of a gunman near the 51200 block of Jackson Street Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses said multiple fire crews and Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputies are on scene at this time, and have blocked off the intersection.
