Local LGBT community members react to Trump’s RNC speech

A section of Donald Trump’s nomination acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) came as a surprise to some.

“I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens,” Trump said during his speech at the convention in Cleveland.

Miguel Sanchez and his fellow friends in the Palm Springs LGBT community meet every week for what they call their Sunday ritual at Chill Bar.

They said their votes won’t be swayed by Trump’s speech come November.

“He’s just playing something trying to convince some people to vote for him,” Sanchez said. “He doesn’t mean anything he says. His nod to the LGBT community were disingenuous at best.”

Palm Springs local David Weiner called Trump’s speech “lip service.”

“His speech and the excerpts I saw of his speech were so reminiscent of early 1930’s Germany that it was really really sad,” Weiner said.

John Patrick Agers, a former Bernie Sanders supporter, said he’s not on board with Trump, but still not entirely sold on presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton either.

“I’m really impressed with her running mate,” Agers said. “Really impressed. I mean if he was running on his own, I would want him for President.”

He said there is hope though.

“Hillary I still need some persuading, and I still have a write in if I choose to use it, but I would consider voting for Hillary,” Agers said.
