Politics take over social media

The debate is on– Would you unfollow someone on social media due to their political beliefs?

Some people think its a bit extreme while others would not hesitate to unfriend someone.

It’s happening all over social media; name calling, unfollowing, and even threats.

Amber Black, La Quinta resident shared her reaction to what she sees on social media in regards to politics. “There are people who say things that are kind of shocking or do things that you wouldn’t believe,” said Black.

A Facebook user, who asked not to be identified said he is willing to lose friends to stand up for his beliefs– and he’s not the only one.

Social media users nationwide have expressed their reasons why they would unfriend social media followers.

Some people are upset at the fact that close friends have contrasting morals and values, while others have been called bad names.

Today our news team spoke to political analyst and law student, Devon Gray.

He says social media plays an import, healthy roll in the election, but to be aware of the way you share your views.

“Be respectful towards people, civil discourse is good…name calling is not constructive towards good dialogue.

Also, I would make sure to source yourself, make sure all of your facts are checked so you’re not going to be called out on that,” said Gray.

This election season is especially unique because of the active presence of social media.

Social media has played a vital roll in opening the political conversations to younger generations, as they are currently more involved than they ever were before.

“Young people are more politically engaged because we have such an access to a variety of news sources. It allows us to be a little bit more informed, perhaps, than previous generations have been,” said Gray.

“It’s important to have dialogue and debate in a public forum. It allows us to come to a greater consensus as we take a larger responsibility in society,” Gray continued.

None the less, people are still finding a hard time to find a middle ground.

We might just have to wait until November to rekindle those friendships.
