Hundreds march for Black Lives Matter protest

Hundreds of activists and protesters showed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement with a rally and march Monday night.

The rally started at Francis Stevens Park before protesters marched south on Palm Canyon Drive, turning on Tahquitz Canyon Drive, then traveling north on Indian Canyon Drive.

These protesters were sighting multiple recent occurrences where black men were killed at the hands of police across the country, and were demanding for changes to be made in the relationship between the black community and police.

“Since everything that’s going on around the country, I am in fear of the police,” said Stacy Black, one of the organizers of the protest.

“We need to see each other is one race, the human race, and that would definitely stop the problem instead of separating us just based on color,” said Krystal Armstrong, a Black Lives Matter activist.

The Palm Springs Police Department was in full force for the protest. Many of the officers engaging in community policing by walking inside the crowd and taking time to talk to protesters.

Some of these activists have been involved in civil rights and race relations of decades.

“I think Black Lives Matter is doing a tremendous job in terms of making people pay attention, not just to black people but to all oppressed people around the world,” said Lucy Debardelaben, who said her aunt was arrested with civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks.
