Locals react to Hillary Clinton making history

Hillary Clinton being named the first woman nominated by a major party for president will go down in history. No matter your party affiliation, Tuesday’s formal announcement of Clinton as the democratic nominee is a monumental moment. Here in the desert, people of every age are celebrating this win for women.

“I think that it’s a really big step for women in America and in the world. Because, like, we didn’t get to vote a while back, and now we get to run for president, so that’s pretty cool,” said Gwendolyn Montes.

Elizabeth Scarcella said regardless of which party you support, this sends a message that woman can do anything a man can.

“There is no glass ceiling anymore. That you can be anything you want, it makes me emotional to think about,” Scarcella said.

Hollywood heavyweights were lending their star power Tuesday night with speeches from Lena Dunham and America Ferrera, and a viral video that hit the internet with a slew of celebrities showing support. Young women said Clinton appeals to their age group.

“It will potentially mean more women will become president, too,” said Adrienne Ayala, who’s visiting from Maryland.

And it’s not just women who are behind her. Benjamin Bodeoeau owns Who’s Next in Palm Springs and said if Europe has female leaders, why can’t America?

“I think it will be amazing, it’s a really great thing because a woman will be able to be president in America. So I think it’s going to be a really nice thing for women in particular,” said Bodeoeau.

But not everyone is riding the Hillary train.

“I would never vote for a woman just because she was a woman, and I certainly won’t vote for that woman,” said Kate Brueckner, from Indian Wells.

No matter how you feel about her, more than 200 women have tried to make it to the oval office since 1872 , but none have made it this far, an accomplishment many said proves women are equal to men.

“Women can do everything, and we can do just as well as men, and that we are all equal,” Montes said.
