Armed & dangerous man sought after car drives through HWY 86 checkpoint

The search continues Friday for a man wanted on a $2 million warrant for armed robbery out of San Bernardino. Kevin Pille, 23, was the passenger in a white Hyundai four-door sedan that failed to stop at the Highway 86 Border Patrol checkpoint near Salton City at 10:25 a.m. Thursday.

Border Patrol agents and Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were searching for Pille near a Coachella apartment complex throughout the day after the suspect’s car was found overturned in a crash near Avenue 54 and Harrison Street. The crash occurred about an hour after the driver of the Hyundai illegally passed through the checkpoint.

The driver was found and arrested near the crash scene, but Pille managed to run away and remains at large. Officers said Pille should be considered armed and dangerous.

Border Patrol agents said the suspect’s Hyundai was referred to the secondary inspection area of the checkpoint, but the driver continued on at a high rate of speed.

Border Patrol agents lost sight of the suspect’s Hyundai, but about an hour later, the car was found overturned in a single-vehicle crash near 54th Avenue and Harrison Street.

The driver was found near the crash scene and he was arrested, but Pille ran away and was believed to be hiding out in an apartment complex in the area.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is assisting Border Patrol as they continue to search for the suspect. A helicopter was also scanning the area throughout Thursday afternoon.

Some viewers contacted our newsroom to say they were unable to enter the Cedar Springs Apartments, which are located on Harrison Street between Avenue 53 and Avenue 54, but authorities told us all major roads were back open in the area as of 3:15 p.m.
