Officials identify Marine killed in jet crash near Twentynine Palms

Officials have identified the Marine killed in a jet crash near Twentynine Palms as 36-year-old Maj. Richard Norton from Arcadia.
Norton was based in Miramar near San Diego, was commissioned in the Marine Corps in March of 2005, and was previously deployed in Afghanistan in 2012.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

An investigation was underway Friday into the death of a Miramar-based Marine in the crash of an F/A-18C Hornet near Twentynine Palms. It happened during a training mission at 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
The fighter jet crashed near the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in the Mojave Desert around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar’s 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The name of the pilot killed in the crash was not immediately available.
Military officials said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
