2 local radio stations sign off Friday

Two of the Coachella Valley’s oldest radio stations went off the air Friday.

KPSI Newstalk 920 AM and KWXY 1340 AM will both go silent after decades of operating in the Coachella Valley. The stations are owned by Ric and Rozene Supple, who also own Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs.

“It has just been a really sweet day and kind of a nice sendoff. The Supples, Ric and Rozene, who brought this station to the desert and gave it to this valley for decades and today is the last day so it is bittersweet,” said Terry Masters, the former general manager of KPSI.

The Supples still own the broadcast license and could sell to an interested party.

KPSI went on air in 1956; KWXY in 1964. Friday’s broadcasts included present and past radio hosts and news reporters delivering the final broadcasts.
