Deputies search for armed bank robbers in Coachella

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an armed robbery at the Wells Fargo bank located in the 49200 block of Grapefruit Boulevard in Coachella.

The bank is located in the Gateway Shopping Center. Police received the call at about 11:40 a.m.

Deputies said at least two suspects walked into the bank armed with handguns. It wasn’t clear if they made off with any money, but authorities are still searching for the suspects after they were seen running away from the bank.

The first suspect is described as a Hispanic male, about 6’00” tall, medium build, wearing dark pants and a black long sleeve shirt. The second suspect is described as a Hispanic male, about 5’6″ tall, thin build, wearing dark pants and long sleeve gray shirt.

People who work in the area say they’re not surprised to hear about this robbery.

“It’s happened plenty of times, not just the bank, any basic shopping center. They’ve been robbed before and all the usual stuff, shopping carts and usually there’s a get away car on the other side,” said Stevan Segura, who works in property management.

Cesar Chavez Elementary was placed on a brief lockdown as a precaution, but that has been lifted.
