Coroner id’s man killed in deadly weekend crash in Palm Desert

A police investigation said alcohol was a factor in a two-vehicle collision that left one person dead Saturday night in Palm Desert.
According to the Palm Desert Police Department, 27-year-old Pedro Leon Castellanos of Thousand Palms was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, causing injury.
The PDPD responded to a report of a two-vehicle traffic collision at Monterey Avenue and Dinah Shore Drive in Palm Desert just after 10 p.m.
Results of a police investigation revealed a silver Ford Expedition was traveling northbound on Monterey Avenue when it collided with a white Ford Mustang in the intersection of Monterey Avenue and Dinah Shore Drive.
Upon arrival, paramedics located the passenger of a white Ford Mustang, a resident of Palm Desert, deceased at the scene.
The Riverside County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim only as an adult male. No other details had been released as of Sunday evening.
The driver of the Ford Mustang, also a resident of Palm Desert, was transported to a local area hospital as a precautionary measure. An update on their condition had not been released.
Castellanos was the driver and sole occupant of the Ford Expedition and was not injured. However, he was was taken to an area hospital as a precaution before he was booked at the Riverside County Jail in Indio.
The intersection of Monterey Ave. and Dinah Shore Drive was shut down for hours Saturday night while the investigation took place.
