More earthquakes rattle Salton Sea

A swarm of earthquakes continued to shake the Salton Sea area Monday night.

As of Tuesday morning more than 24 quakes measuring 2.5 magnitude or higher had been recorded.

There were two earthquakes with a magnitude higher than 4.0 and seven quakes with a magnitude higher than 3.0 since 8:23 p.m.

Here’s the latest activity Monday night from the U.S. Geological Survey:

3.2M 8:06 p.m.

4.3M 8:23 p.m.

3.5M 8:25 p.m.

3.0M 8:29 p.m.

4.1M 8:36 p.m.

3.3M 8:39 p.m.

3.5M 8:46 p.m.

3.0M 9:43 p.m.

3.2M 10:52 p.m.

The swarm was taking place under the Salton Sea not far from Bombay Beach.

Monday night’s activities followed an earlier swarm of quakes that happened in roughly the same location starting at 4:38 a.m. Monday.

Seismologists said the quakes were not happening on the San Andreas Fault but near it.

Dr. Lucy Jones of the US Geological Survey took to Twitter to say Monday’s quakes in the Salton Sea were near, but not on, the southern San Andreas fault.
