Power outage snarling traffic and Desert Trip goers

A power outage initially putting nearly 900 people in the dark Friday was caused by a bad underground cable, said a Southern California Edison spokesperson.

The outage started just after 5:45, and shut down Ramon Road between Farrell and Sunrise for about two hours.

The road has since re-opened, as SCE says the outage was isolated.

As of 4:00 a.m. Saturday electricity had returned to all but 238 customers. However, full restoration is expected for 10:00 a.m Saturday according to SCE’s website.

The road closure meant cars were re-routed around a main artery in Palm Springs, and dozens of shuttle buses carrying passengers to the Desert Trip concert in Indio were seen stuck in the traffic.
