Fire officials believe Palm Springs brush fire was arson

Firefighters responded to a brush fire at a golf course in south Palm Springs Monday afternoon that scorched 14 palm trees. The battalion chief believes the fire was intentionally set.

The brush fire ignited in the Mesquite Country Club on El Cielo, south of Ramon Road at about 4:15 p.m. KESQ and CBS Local 2 had a crew at the scene and firefighters were able to douse the flames by about 4:30 p.m.

Viewers sent us photos showing how close the flames were to some of the people golfing at the time it ignited.

The cause of the brush fire is still under investigation, but the battalion chief said there have been multiple fires in the wash area near the scene, making Monday’s fire suspicious. We’ll have updates as the investigation into the fire continues.
