DMV outage could bring fines for those who missed appointment

Update: Indio DMV and Palm Desert DMV back to full operations again

Half of the DMV field offices in California experienced a hardware failure on Monday morning. The outage affected both the Palm Desert and Indio DMVs, and now officials are saying if you missed your vehicle registration date, you have to write a letter to avoid paying a fine.

DMV officials said if you missed your registration date, you must complete a Statement of Facts (REG 256) or write a letter explaining why you were late and the penalty may be waived.

The DMV made significant progress Wednesday night in getting offices back online. As of Thursday at 8:30 a.m., 16 offices were still down and 11 were providing driver license transactions. By Friday morning, all DMV’s were operating normally again except for offices in Brawley, Fontana and Inglewood.

The DMV has 188 facilities in California, including field offices

Monday Report:

According to Jessica Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Department of Motor Vehicles, Palm Desert’s DMV and Indio’s DMV both experienced the hardware problem beginning on Monday.

DMV’s throughout the state are working to bring everything back online. The offices that were down are conducting drive tests, making appointments return, allowing customers to drop off driver license renewals, and helping with paperwork and answering questions, Gonzales said Monday afternoon.

Crews have been working all night to rebuild the system and get offices back up and running. The offices that are still down will continue providing drive tests, making return appointments, helping with paperwork, and answering customer’s questions. The department wants to remind customers that DMV online services are still available and apologizes for any inconvenience this issue has caused.
