2 accused of shooting Cabazon woman arraigned

Two men accused of trying to kill a Cabazon woman were arraigned Wednesday on attempted murder and other charges.

Lanh Josiah Bui, 21, and Ernie Mike Saldana, 48, both of Cabazon, were arrested on Nov. 12 for the alleged attack in the 52300 block of Maxine Avenue, near Lemon Street. Along with the attempted murder count, Bui and Saldana are each charged with sentence-enhancing allegations of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The defendants entered not guilty pleas before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jorge Hernandez, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Dec. 6 at the Banning Justice Center. The judge kept bail at $1 million for both defendants, who are being held at the nearby Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.

The men are accused of opening fire on the 46-year-old victim in the early afternoon hours of Nov. 12, striking her multiple times as she stood in the front yard of a residence.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Beatty said the victim, whose name was withheld, was transported to an inland trauma center in serious condition. She underwent surgery and is now in recovery. Beatty did not disclose a possible motive for the shooting, nor did he specify what relationship, if any, the victim had to the defendants.

Neither Bui or Saldana have prior documented felony convictions in Riverside County.
