3 Thanksgiving Day runs planned across Coachella Valley

Coachella Valley residents can get a head start on their Thanksgiving appetites with a trio of Thanksgiving Day early morning runs.

In Palm Springs, the Running Wild’s Wild Turkey Trot 5K will be held downtown on Palm Canyon Drive. The 5K is open to all ages, including those bringing strollers or pets. Runners looking to flaunt their holiday spirit are encouraged to run in a turkey, pilgrim or other Thanksgiving-themed costume, with the best dressed
to be awarded special trophies.

Awards will also be given to the top three male, female and four-legged finishers across five age categories, up to 85 and older.

The race begins at 8 a.m., taking off from 101 S. Palm Canyon Drive. Registration is $40, with proceeds going towards the Mizell Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels Program. Those who still haven’t registered may pick up
registration materials at the corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way.

In Palm Desert, the Fortem Financial Thanksgiving Day 5K is expected to draw thousands along El Paseo. The 5K will benefit Indio’s Martha’s Village & Kitchen, which provides needed services for the Coachella Valley’s homeless.

Registration opens at 6 a.m. and is $40 for adults, $32 for children under 12. The race begins at 8 a.m.

New to 2016’s event is the kid’s zone, featuring games and face painting, and the beer garden, hosted by the La Quinta Brewing Company.

In La Quinta, runners will take to the trails with the La Quinta Gem of the Desert 5K Trail Run/Walk. The run will take off on Bear Creek Trail near the intersection of Avenida Montezuma and Calle Chillon.

Registration on race day will open at 6 a.m. and is $40 for adults, $30 for kids 11 and under and seniors 60 and over.
