Pedestrian dies after being struck by car in Mecca

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car on Highway 111 in Mecca on Saturday night.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol said a 23-year-old woman from Indio was driving southbound on Highway 111 near Highway 195 when a male entered the southbound lane directly in front of her car. The car collided with the male and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver wasn’t injured.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office is expected to identify the victim soon.

The collision is still under investigation and officers said it’s unknown at the time if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor.
