Small quake reported near Salton Sea

A small quake rattled the Coachella Valley Tuesday afternoon. According to USGS, a magnitude-3.2 earthquake struck just west of the Salton Sea and about 30 miles south of the Coachella Valley.

The quake was reported at 12:11 p.m. The epicenter was about six miles north of Ocotillo Wells, according to the USGS. The region in and near the Salton Sea, where the San Andreas fault terminates, has been subject to numerous minor quakes in recent months.

On Sept. 26, a “swarm” of nearly 300 small quakes ranging from magnitude-0.7 to magnitude-4.3 struck the southern portion of the lake. A similar cluster of about 35 events hit just south of the Salton Sea on Oct. 31. The largest of those was a magnitude-3.5 temblor recorded near Niland in Imperial County.
