Marine killed trying to save woman in crash

A Cathedral City family is in mourning after the loss of a Marine who was killed on Interstate 10 while he was trying to save others involved in a crash.

The crash happen Monday night in the westbound lanes of the highway in Loma Linda. Staff Sgt. Enrico Rojo, his fiance and his soon to be sister in law Mary Jane Medina saw a car flipping multiple times.

“It was like a movie scene you just see this car tumbling over and over again on the same lane we were,” said Medina.

Rojo had the group pull over the car so he could see if anyone in the rolled over vehicle needed help. He managed to cross three lanes and was talking to a woman in the car when he was struck by another driver.

The driver pulled over and called 911. Rojo was dead at the scene. Police arrested the female driver of the rolled over vehicle for suspicion of driving under the influence.

“He is trying to do a selfless act and trying to save you and I hear you are driving under the influence it’s kind of frustrating and it cost someone’s life,” said Medina.

Rojo severed for four years with the Marines. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being injured by an IED explosion while on a tour in Afghanistan.

Rojo’s remains will be sent to his family in Humle, Texas, for burial.
