Suicide 3rd leading cause of death among teens

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says for every suicide there are 25 attempts.

Madeline Muth was 19 when she committed suicide 15 months ago Wednesday.

“She faced a lot of struggles throughout her life and she overcame many of them. However, there was a day that she was not able to deal with those [struggles],” said her father Dave Muth.

Since her death, Muth continues to spread awareness about suicide prevention by working closely with families who have been affected by suicide. He says it’s important for parents to find help for their children.

“It was very painful. We did everything we could for her. Our lives revolved around her,” Muth said.

Muth said Madeline struggled with mental health since she was 11.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16 percent of high school students have reported suicidal thoughts.
One advocate said parents need to be involved in suicide prevention.

“There are some signs to look out for: If they are giving away their prized possessions; if they have mood swings; if they are a straight A student and now they are failing; If their behavior [changes],” said Brenda Kahng with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Kahng says teens express themselves three ways: through writing, art or telling someone.

“Sometimes a cry of a student will go to an educator because they believe the student will believe that the teacher will get them the help,” Kahng said.

Kahng and Muth work together as advocates and say not every teen dealing suffering from their mental health has to feel trapped. If they find the right help, they can avoid suicide.
