Inmate dies after fight breaks out at Banning jail

An inmate has died from injuries sustained during a fight at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning over the weekend. The fight broke out Saturday at 12 p.m. inside a dayroom, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said they arrived within a minute of the fight breaking out and found one of the inmates down and unconscious. The inmate was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but deputies said he succumbed to his injuries as of Wednesday morning.

Deputies haven’t released the identities of either of the inmates at this time pending notification of family members and the ongoing investigation.
