Local animal lovers take part in polar bear plunge

Local animal lovers splashed into ice cold water Saturday morning all for a good cause.

Society’s Outcasts Animal Rescue (SOAR) hosted their first ever polar bear plunge.

It might sound welcoming, but the pool in Rancho Mirage was chilled with 1,000 pounds of ice.

But that didn’t stop the swimmers.

A few brave souls plunged into freezing water, and were awarded with spay/neuter clinics for their organizations, as well as food and beds for needy cats and dogs.

“We’re doing a spay and neuter clinic in slab city which is our pet project, and we are also going to fund a project for our crazy cat ladies,” SOAR Co-Founder and President Janeen Bahr said.

SOAR tries to stop the flow into shelters by funding spay and neuter clinics across the Coachella Valley.
