Palm Springs continues to rally for sanctuary city status

The reaction to President Trump’s executive orders on immigration remains strong in the desert. Tuesday in Palm Springs, efforts were at full throttle to push leaders to declare Palm Springs as a sanctuary city.

KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 heard reaction from the community and city leaders on Monday as the rally first began. And we followed up with the movement as residents gathered again on Tuesday in front of City Hall.

Another rally is planned Tuesday at 5:30PM at Frances Stevens Park at 555 N Palm Canyon Drive.

Local organizations want the city to adopt a policy of protecting illegal immigrants by not prosecuting them for violating federal immigration laws. The event is sponsored by, ‘The Courageous Resistance: Palm Springs and other Desert Cities’.

Organizers said they are standing with Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, New York, Austin and many other cities refusing to comply with the president’s executive orders.

Last week, President Trump signed two executive orders on illegal immigration; one of which directed the Department of Homeland Security to crack down on sanctuary cities.

Meanwhile, local residents continue to put pressure on the Palm Springs City Council to designate the city as a sanctuary city. As the pressure mounts, a second rally takes place at Frances Stevens Park Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Frances Stevens Park is located at 555 N Palm Canyon Drive.

We’ll break down all of this information for you on Tuesday night as we speak to a city council member to hear the city’s stance on the movement. You can see all of the most recent developments on the sanctuary city-status of Palm Springs in a live report on KESQ News Channel 3 at 5 p.m. and on CBS Local 2 at 5:30 p.m.
