Injured hiker airlifted off of Mecca hiking trail

A hiker had to be airlifted off of a Mecca hiking trail after sustaining injuries in a hard-to-reach location for emergency responders.

County firefighters received reports at 12:27 p.m. on Friday of a hiker down near Box Canyon and Painted Canyon roads, said Tawny Castro of the Riverside County Fire Department.

Due to the location of the injured victim, county fire crews requested the help of a California Highway Patrol helicopter to reach the downed hiker, Castro said.

CHP’s Helicopter 60 was able to land nearby and airlifted the victim to an awaiting ambulance, which took the hiker to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Castro said.
