Border Patrol finds 43 pounds of meth hidden inside gas tank

A 19-year-old man from the United States was arrested at the Highway 86 Border Patrol checkpoint early Monday morning after agents discovered over 43 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside his car’s gas tank.

The man was stopped at about 3:40 a.m. At the secondary inspection, a canine alerted to the undercarriage of the car, where agents discovered 30 packages of methamphetamine concealed in the car’s gas tank.

The meth weighed 43.46 pounds and is estimated to cost $173,840, agents said in a release.

The man, narcotics and the car were all turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency as the drug smuggling investigation continues. El Centro Sector agents said they have seized more than 317.63 pounds of methamphetamine since Oct. 1, 2016.
