Update 2/6/17:

CBS Local 2 stands for you and your safety when it comes to smart phones. Last week we brought you a story about the best tablets and smartphones on the market right now, helping you decide between available Android and Apple products.

Since then, CBS News reported claims from a woman in Florida who says her iPhone 6 Plus caught fire while sitting on her nightstand by her head while she was sleeping.

While Apple is apparently still investigating this claim, it’s reminiscent of the horror stories from exploding Samsung Note 7 smartphones. Tech specialist Daniel Algazi from DA Computers explains why these explosions happened with the Samsung phones.

“Their batteries were exploding because they were such a high capacity that the charging ports on them cause an overflow of charge and the battery would explode,” Algazi said, “Not just like pop, but explodes.”

There’s no word yet on the cause of this recent iPhone 6 Plus explosion.

Original Story:

CBS Local 2’s Kelley Moody does the research on the best technology on the market right now, for speed, battery life, and storage.

Tech specialists Daniel Algazi and Matthew Levy of DA Computers in Palm Springs offered advice in evaluating tablets and smartphones on the market.

First up, speed. When it comes to tablets, Levy recommends the iPad Pro 12.9-inch because of the high grade chips used in Apple products.

“They’re all really fast. The fastest in my opinion would be that A9 chip with Apple,” Levy said.

For your smartphone pick for speed, Algazi said it’s all about the processor inside the device. He recommends waiting it out and grabbing the Google Pixel 2, rumored to launch later this year.

What about battery life?

Levy said he prefers iPad batteries as opposed to what’s offered in Android devices.

“They devote a lot of their energy and time and research into these things,” Levy said, “The entire unit is almost a battery.”

Levy said that, once again, the iPad Pro 12.9-inch takes the cake, but Algazi thinks for smartphones, if you’re talking battery alone, Androids are the way to go Because so many manufacturers make Androids he said the batteries are typically stronger that in Apple’s iPhones. Algazi recommends a Samsung Note, but with a disclaimer.

“Notes are really popular. They did get a recall on their recent series, so I wouldn’t do the latest model,” Algazi said, “I would do the model behind it.”

For storage, Apple doesn’t rank quite so high. Levy said that if you’re buying a tablet based on storage alone, you might want to consider other options.

“(On) some Android manufacturers, specifically Samsung, you can get extensions on your memory cards,” Levy said. “If you’re looking for extendable memory, I would recommend buying a Samsung.”

Levy said the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 in would be a good option.

With smartphones, Algazi said to go ahead and stay with Apple, but it’s worth paying top dollar to get the most storage possible.

“If you were to purchase the 32 GB iPhone, it’s really not recommended. I would not recommend it because the operating system is going to take up most of that storage space,” Algazi said.

And if you simply want something that will last you a long time, Levy said the higher price is typically an indication of how long they’re going to last.
