Sentencing delayed for Indio man accused of beating mother to death

Sentencing for an Indio man accused of beating his mother to death has been delayed because of a motion for a new trial.

Daniel Castro, 33, faces 15 years to life on charges of killing his mother, Ofelia Guzman back in 2011.

Castro’s family argues he shouldn’t have been considered mentally competent to stand trial. He was committed to Patton State Hospital twice.

The judge denied the motion for a new trial, but postponed Castro’s sentencing to March 3 so he can review reports from mental health experts who evaluated him.
