Man arrested after Border Patrol finds 46 pounds of meth in SUV

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a man suspected of smuggling methamphetamine at the Highway 111 checkpoint on Saturday night. The 42-year-old man was stopped at about 6:30 p .m. in a Dodge Durango.

The man was taken to the secondary inspection after a canine alerted agents to his vehicle. During the inspection, agents said they found 13 packages hidden in the vehicle’s front and back seat cushions. The packages tested positive for methamphetamine.

Authorities said the meth weighed 46.81 pounds and is estimated to be worth $187,240 on the street. The suspect is a permanent legal resident and he was handed over to the D.E.A. for further investigation.

“Our K-9 agents play a vital role in the safeguarding of our communities by helping prevent dangerous drugs such as these from reaching our city streets,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim.

El Centro Sector Border Patrol has seized more than 478.61 pounds of methamphetamine since October 1, 2016, according to authorities.
