Domestic violence suspect barricades himself inside Indio home

The Indio Police Department has called a SWAT team to a home where a mentally distraught suspect has barricaded himself inside, and is possibly armed with a handgun, authorities said Thursday.

Indio Middle School was on Locked out mode while police and SWAT responded to the home Thursday afternoon, and students were expected to be dismissed at 2:28 p.m., according to an official with the school district.

Police responded to the home on Swingle Avenue shortly after 12 p.m. Officers said they are staging near Clinton Street while the SWAT team responds to the home. Officers said the suspect was being sought on domestic violence charges when he ran into the home.

There aren’t any hostages involved. Swingle Avenue is blocked off to traffic at Miles Avenue, just west of Clinton Street. .
