Suspect dies following SWAT standoff in Indio

A domestic violence suspect barricaded himself inside an Indio home last Thursday, prompting a nearly six-hour standoff that ended with the man’s hospitalization from a self-inflicted wound. About six days after the incident occurred, KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 learned the man died the very next day at the hospital.

Indio police hadn’t released the suspect’s name or any additional information following the standoff, but according to the coroner’s report, 40-year-old Abraham Hernandez Sr. died at Desert Regional Medical Center on Friday, February 17 at about 4 p.m.

The location of his injury was listed as the 80000 block of Francis Avenue in Indio. The Indio Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death. The location is exactly where the SWAT standoff took place and the time of the injury was the same as well.

KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will continue to deliver updates as we hear back from authorities.

Officers were called around noon to the home near Francis Street and Swingle Avenue, according to Indio police Sgt. Daniel Marshall, a man wanted on a domestic violence warrant holed up alone inside the residence after police spotted him with a gun.

“I was scared for the people around the house because they could have been shot and in danger,” Juan, a teenager watching nearby, said.

The standoff led officers to call in the department’s Desert Regional SWAT team, block off intersections surrounding the home and led to a brief lockdown of nearby Indio Middle School. People in the area said they heard loud booms before swat went in.

“Right when we got off we heard two flashbangs and four gunshots,” Juan said.

Indio police at the scene said law enforcement did not discharge any firearms but did deploy distractionary devices.

The standoff ended at around 5:30 p.m. with the unidentified suspect taken to a hospital in serious condition due to a self-inflicted wound, said Marshall, who could not immediately confirm whether the wound was a gunshot.

“I’m just glad that everyone is OK and that they got him,” James, a teenager watching nearby, said.
