Tips on dealing with your allergies

February’s unusually wet weather is making for a very colorful valley. Flowers are blooming and hillsides are green but all the pollen in the air is making it tough on those who suffer from allergies.

The desert hasn’t been this green in years, but for many, it comes with a price, itchy eyes and runny noses.

KESQ & CBS Local 2’s Lauren Coronado spoke with a local pharmacist to get some tips on how to deal with seasonal allergies.

“It’s a total pain in the butt. It’s not a lot of fun.” Palm Desert resident Mike Lavelle on gong through allergies.

Desert RX pharmacist Diane Nguyen says she’s seeing an influx of allergy patients.

“Because we had quite a bit of rain this year, there will be more people coming in asking for allergy medications,” said Nguyen.

Nguyen says the faster you treat allergies, the better…

“An antihistamine is really great, it blocks the receptor so those symptoms don’t appear. Claritin, Allegra Zyrtec those are safe to take. If you notice the symptoms are more severe definitely seek an allergist,” said Nguyen.

As irritating as allergies can be, people agree the beautiful view is worth it.

“You can manage the symptoms, but you have to get a head of it. I love this, I walk around the desert and see the white flowers and vegetation on the hills, oh my god it’s amazing,” said Lavelle.

If you’re having a hard time differentiating the difference between allergies and the common cold. Nguyen says some things that will help identify that you are suffering from a cold are body aches, fever, headaches, and fatigue.
