Arraignment set for Indio man accused of stabbing women with screwdriver

Attempted murder, torture, mayhem and false imprisonment charges have been filed against an Indio man accused of stabbing two women with a screwdriver and barricading himself inside a home.

Erick Maciel, 31, is slated for arraignment Wednesday afternoon at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.

Two women are recovering at the hospital after Maciel allegedly stabbed them with a screwdriver on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred at a home in the 81500 block of Santa Barbara Court at about 12:30 p.m. Officers were giving medical aid to the women when Maciel barricaded himself inside the home. Maciel was arrested after a brief standoff with police.

Officers said the standoff ended peacefully at about 3 p.m.

The two women were taken to a hospital to be treated. Officers said the first victim is still hospitalized in serious condition. The second victim is in stable condition at the hospital. Officer believe one of the victims is a former girlfriend of Maciel who used to live with him.

Maciel was arrested for several felonies including attempted murder, aggravated mayhem and domestic violence. He’s being held without bail and is due at the Larson Justice Center on March 7.

Lauren Coronado reported live from the scene just as the scene was clearing.
