1st day of full tournament action at BNP Paribas Open begins

Thursday is the first day of full tournament action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Nearly all of tennis’s top players on both the women’s and men’s side will be at the tennis garden; either playing or practicing.

KESQ and CBS Local 2’s Jeremy Chen was in Indian Wells Thursday morning where the doors open at 10 a.m. and tournament action starts at 11 a.m. Tennis fans can expect to see the top players warming up on the practice courts and they’ll be able to catch some matches as well.

It’s going to be a sunny day and it could get pretty hot in the stands. Fans should make sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats to protect themselves from the heat.

Todd Hombs, Director of First Aid at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden said his staff was ready for anyone on the grounds feeling ill from the expected heat at the tournament.

“If they have a problem and they are overheated, we bring them into first aid and we take good care of them and we can cool them down, give them a nice cool water and we get them ready to go back out and watch some more great tennis,” Hombs said.

Fan were prepared with sunscreen and water to handle the hot weather.

“We’ve got SPF 70 on…there’s not a single ray that’s going to penetrate in any of this,” Ann Gors, a fan from Petaluma, California said as she pointed to her chest.

“The water you know, you have to drink quite often…because otherwise dehydration and everything,” Chandra Kant, a fan from New Jersey, said. “Water goes out of your body so you have to replace water.”

Many eyes will be on Roger Federer, who for a long time has been the best tennis player in the world. While his ranking has slipped and is the number nine seed at the tournament, he did win the Australian Open beating his longtime rival, Rafael Nadal.
