Activists take to Palm Springs for International Women’s day

On Wednesday, women across the country took the day off work to hit the streets in solidarity for ‘A Day Without Women’ events.

In Palm Springs, more than 200 people came together wearing red to celebrate women.

“I have a hard time understanding why the hatred is going on. We are here to celebrate women and I celebrate women and the wives, mothers and sisters that help the planet and make it softer,” Melinda Tremaglio said.

Another activist and organizer of the International Women’s Day of Persistence rally said she was there to stand up for women’s rights.

“Our rights are not so slowly, but quickly being taken away from us. If they have their way, they’ll defund Planned Parenthood. They will take away our right to legal and safe abortion,” Ruth Debra of Courageous Resistance said.

As speakers shed light on current issues, many said they need to fight for equality.

“It’s the women who are spearheading the movement for civil rights and human rights for everyone no matter your gender, your race, your religion, your culture,” Lynn Simonson said.

The rally, spurred by International Women’s Day, also had the Palm Springs Police Department showing recognition for women in law enforcement with a video on Twitter.

At the rally, many people shared their dislike for President Donald Trump and his administration’s decisions. Debra said it’s a war on women.

“We will keep protesting. I am very angry but I’m encouraged by the level of protests in this country,” Debra said.
