Man gets new trial after being sentenced to life in prison

A Desert Hot Springs man is getting a new trial after he was sentenced to life in prison for his alleged role in the deadly shooting of a 17-year-old Palm Springs high school student.

This after an appeals court ruled the evidence against him was inconclusive and that a prosecutor made an improper argument during his first trial. Ian Davis Hudgins, 40, was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2013. He was also found guilty of attempted murder.

Hudgins is accused of killing Jahi Collins and wounding his friend, while they sat in a car in Desert Hot Springs more than 20 years ago.

Another man was also convicted in the shooting. That man was charged in the shooting but never tried. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Hudgins will be back in court next month.
