Residents dive in to help save bighorn
A good Samaritan helped save a bighorn lamb from drowning in a La Quinta canal over the weekend. The incident occurred at PGA West.
The La Quinta City Council recently approved the construction of a fence at SilverRock Resort in La Quinta to prevent similar incidents from occurring with wandering bighorn lambs on the golf course.
KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 spoke to Melissa Baldridge of Camarillo and her friends to find out why they jumped into action to save the startled struggling creature that was in danger of drowning.
“In the moment of it happening there was no time it was just take action and once the baby was running out of the canal and safe then it all came together that we just did that woooo hoooo,” said Melissa Baldridge via skype.
Experts with the bighorn institute are happy that one of our deserts endangered species was saved from drowning.
But since these sheep are listed as endangered – only qualified people should ever handle them.
In an emergency situation, people should call the California Department of Fish and Wildlife or the Bighorn Institute to get expert assistance.
Some communities like silver rock are installing fences to keep sheep out of these situations.
We called PGA west to see if they have any new plans on keeping sheep safe on their property – but no one has responded back with an answer.
Right now we are in the middle of the lambing season which runs from January to June.
Herds in our area are having babies trying to bounce back as one of the most iconic animals in our ecosystem.
