Coroner identifies woman & child killed in rollover crash
The California Highway Patrol is releasing new information about a deadly rollover crash on I-10 that occurred Monday in Desert Center, and the coroner’s office has identified the woman and child who died after being ejected from the SUV.
The coroner’s office identified the woman as 30-year-old Kristen Duran of Lubbock, Texas. The child who was killed was 9-year-old Anthony Duran, also from Lubbock, Texas. Neither of them were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the interstate, just east of Box Canyon Road, near mile post 83.
An I-Team Investigation by KESQ’s Karen Devine recently uncovered a sharp increase of deadly crashes along that same stretch of roadway.
California Highway Patrol officers said the crash occurred after the SUV’s left rear tire blew out, causing the driver, 39-year-old Kris Deleon of Lubbock, Texas, to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV traveled to the right, off the roadway and rolled multiple times.
Kris Deleon sustained major injuries and a five-month-old girl did as well. They were both airlifted to the Riverside University Health System.
The collision is still under investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs don’t appear to be a factor, officers said in a release.
